Walk away from this session with a better understanding of the different types of learning media (the student's own body, an object, more than one object, pictures, people etc.) and ways to support students with severe and multiple disabilities in the classroom throughout your daily schedule. There will be hands on examples for you to explore!

Presentation Outcomes 
  1. Understand the definition of literacy and why literacy instruction is important for students of all ability levels
  2. Outline the difference between physical, compensatory, and cognitive access to literacy experiences including gaining a working knowledge of the hierarchy of learning media
  3. Have ideas to construct their own adapted literacy experiences that focus on multi-sensory learning

    • How does AAC make this possible? (high and low tech) 
  • Ways to Access Literacy with Respect to… 
    • Physical Access (positioning of the body)
    • Compensatory Access (taking into account vision, language, hearing, etc. needs)
    • Cognitive Access (maintaining engagement, checking for understanding) 
  • Hierarchy of Learning Media 
    • Own Body, Objects/People/Actions Touching the Body, Objects/People/Actions Beyond the Body, Clusters of objects, people, actions, and places that are part of events beyond the body, and Symbols for objects, people, actions, places, and events
  • Adapted Literacy Experiences 
    • Adding sounds, light, texture, etc. to make books more engaging.
