Canvas Calendar
Friday March 7, 2025 9:00am - 9:45am CST
So here's the thing. . . .I can't module.  Modules remind me of filing cabinets.  I never figured out a way to organize them. . . by date, alphabetical, by unit and then a file folder would inevitably slide down and be lost forever.  When I first started using Canvas, that is exactly how Modules felt to me, so I started using the calendar to plan and organize for myself and the students.  If you struggle with Modules and organizing them, maybe I have some tips and tricks to make the process easier for you.  Or maybe you have some tips and tricks for me. . .for all of us.

The integration of AI into education is reshaping the classroom experience for both teachers and students. Whether you choose to incorporate AI or not, its presence in education is undeniable—and understanding its potential can empower both teachers and students. This session is not designed to pressure you to do anything with AI, but to look at some options that you have at your disposal when it comes to either reducing its presence in your classroom, or promoting its presence--- on your terms.

What we can all learn from John Haidt's Anxious Generation
Friday March 7, 2025 9:55am - 10:40am CST
Understanding why today’s students often seem more fragile and anxious is a question every educator is asking. Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation, provides powerful insights into the cultural and societal shifts contributing to these challenges, particularly the impact of early exposure to smartphones and social media. This workshop will equip educators with the knowledge to become advocates for healthier childhoods by sharing this vital information with parents. Together, we can empower families to make informed decisions—like delaying the introduction of cell phones and social media until at least age 16—to foster stronger, more resilient students in our community.

Creating an Accommodating Classroom in a Regular Ed World
Friday March 7, 2025 10:50am - 11:35am CST
I have been in special education for 10 years (which isn't much and I am by no means an expert), but in my 10 years, I have taught students from 6th grade to 12th in cotaught and resource settings. Secondary education isn't always the easiest to accommodate in a "non-obvious" way. I will go through some of the more common accommodations that teachers may see in the IEPs at the beginning of the year and the ways to provide those accommodations that don't single out the student with an IEP. I will also provide teachers an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session.

Together, we'll explore simple yet powerful productivity techniques that can help reduce the overwhelming feeling of always being behind and create more breathing room in our busy professional lives. I'm not promising a magic solution, but rather a collection of honest, field-tested approaches that have made a real difference for me and my colleagues. Going Gaga for Gaga Ball
Friday March 7, 2025 12:45pm - 1:30pm CST
The game of gaga, often described as a kinder and gentler version of dodgeball, is gaining popularity on various playgrounds, replacing more traditional games. Parents, educators, camp counselors, and children alike are embracing this trend, viewing the rise of gaga as a positive development. Many refer to gaga as “the great playground equalizer,” as it does not necessitate a powerful throwing arm, speed, or exceptional hand-eye coordination. This inclusivity allows nearly anyone to participate. “It creates a level playing field for everyone—athletes, creative kids, and avid readers alike,” remarked Joe Cortesi, a physical education teacher in Madison, who assisted in establishing two gaga pits at the school this past spring. In this session, we will introduce GAGA Ball, a game suitable for all ages.

Going Gaga for Gaga Ball
Friday March 7, 2025 1:40pm - 2:25pm CST

Creating an Accommodating Classroom in a Regular Ed World
Friday March 7, 2025 1:40pm - 2:25pm CST
I have been in special education for 10 years (which isn't much and I am by no means an expert), but in my 10 years, I have taught students from 6th grade to 12th in cotaught and resource settings. Secondary education isn't always the easiest to accommodate in a "non-obvious" way. I will go through some of the more common accommodations that teachers may see in the IEPs at the beginning of the year and the ways to provide those accommodations that don't single out the student with an IEP. I will also provide teachers an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session.

Round Table Discussion about student behaviors and success stories.
Friday March 7, 2025 1:40pm - 2:25pm CST
Some time as educators we put students in a box. Most of the students have behaved in different ways in our buildings to get labeled with in this way. I would like to talk to my fellow educators about the danger of a single story for these students. I have been only teaching In-School Suspension for 5 years, but in that time I have had several successes with my students. I would like to speak and then have a round table discussion about these student behaviors and success stories.
